How Patches Can Teach You The Art Of Embroidery

It used to be, in days gone by, that the typical American girl was taught how to do embroidery when she was growing up. By the time they reached adulthood they could create stunningly beautiful designs that worked well on pillows, draperies, tablecloths, and even clothing. Even men offering custom tailoring services would learn how to embroider so that they could add these designs to their service. Today it seems that hand embroidery is a lost art that very few people know how to do. This is a real pity because there are some really amazing designs that can be created by the skilled embroiderer.

If you’d like to learn how to do hand embroidery it’s actually pretty simple in terms of technique. The skill comes in to play when designing pieces and figuring out how to blend the different threads properly. To develop this skill, most people will have to put in quite a bit of practice. To get this practice, blank patches really are a must. Blank patches offer you the ability to create your own designs and easily remove threads when you make a mistake – without damage to the patch. You do not have this leeway if you are using a piece of muslin cloth for example.

Your Design

Beginners should start with simple designs that only use a minimum number of different colored threads. Sketch your design on a piece of scrap paper and color it accordingly, being careful to make sure it is the same color as your eventual finished product. Then cut the design out, along its outside border, and attach it to your patch with a little bit of white glue. You now have a template you can follow to run your stitches through your patch.

You’ll find that as your embroidery becomes more complete you will be covering up the paper template at the same time. You may be able to peel some of this paper away as you stitch but this will depend on how intricate your design is. Regardless, using this template method to learn helps you to conceptualize your embroidery designs.

Hand Stitching Through Plastic Backing

It’s difficult these days to find blank patches without a plastic backing. Sewing on to patches without this plastic backing is much easier to do so buy as many as you can if you can find them. Otherwise, running your needle and thread through the plastic backing on a blank patch can be tiresome and, in some cases, slightly painful. But it won’t be long before your body gets used to this and it will become less noticeable. Just remember to take things slowly at the start and gradually build up until you’re able to hand stitch for hours on end. Once you can master hand embroidery using a plastic-backed patch, you’ll be able to do it in just about any other medium as well.

If you are looking for somewhere to find blank patches then you should have a look at online retailers such as The Cheap Place. They give you pretty good prices and a variety of sizes and styles to choose from.
